🔬 🌎 It's World Science Day for Peace and Development! 2023 theme: Building Trust In Science Celebrated every 10th November, the United Nations World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to highlight the significant role of science in society. It also aims to emphasise the role scientists have to play in broadening our understanding of the planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. ♻ Key aims of the day: 1. Raise awareness about the role of science in building peaceful and sustainable societies. 2. Address the challenges that scientists face in gaining support for their crucial work. 3. Renew global commitment to leveraging science for societal benefits. At Science Card, our goal is to fast-track scientific research to benefit society and foster a sustainable future. We seek to address research funding gaps to kickstart promising projects that can make a real impact. The UN’s World Science Day for Peace and Development provides a valuable opportunity to spotlight the practical application of science in shaping a better future for all. Our commitment at Science Card also strongly aligns with the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs). Each research project introduced onto our platform is carefully assessed to ensure a positive contribution towards the 17 SDGs. 🚀 🔗 Here's the link to the full page: https://lnkd.in/gziME3U #WorldScienceDay #ScienceCard #Sustainability

Founding Executive Director, BRIDGES Sustainability Science Coalition, UNESCO Management of Social Transformations programme
The United Nations General Assembly's proclamation that 2024 to 2033 will be the "International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD)" marks a significant step forward for science and for the mission of just and inclusive sustainability in our world. The BRIDGES coalition, through our founding partners UNESCO, CIPSH and Humanities for the Environment, our key strategic partners the International Science Council and The Club of Rome, have been privileged to closely follow the discussions and efforts that have led to this momentous commitment by the #UNGA. Indeed, nothing more concisely encapsulates the mission of the #BRIDGES Coalition in UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations programme than "the imperative to bridge...scientific disciplines and knowledge forms in order to address the complex and intricate challenges of our time." As the ISC notes, "achieving sustainable development requires a global #transdisciplinary and multidimensional approach - one that bridges #science disciplines, all forms of knowledge, and the realms of science, policy, and action." This is the mission the BRIDGES Coalition was established to achieve, and we stand ready!
Last Friday, the UNGA has proclaimed 2024 - 2033 as the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (#IDSSD). This stands as the recognition, at the higher international level, that achieving sustainable development requires a global #transdisciplinary and multidimensional approach - one that bridges #science disciplines, all forms of knowledge, and the realms of science, policy, and action. The ISC does not only support this approach but goes beyond, advancing that the codesign of research and action should be embraced as the standard practice in sustainability science, and be considered an essential and integral addition to the traditional scientific paradigm. Nature correspondence: Dr Marguerite Nyhan and Professor John Cryan write that while global efforts in science, technology and innovation could accelerate achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, scientists need to be incentivised to contribute to these goals with new reward and evaluation systems which capture both scientific excellence and SDG impact. This message is extremely important ahead of next week's 2023 United Nations SDG Summit. The summit marks the midpoint of the adoption of the SDGs in 2015 and their proposed achievement by 2030. Only a small fraction of SDG targets are on track to be achieved while a majority are severely off track or have regressed. As such, the authors propose that global efforts in science, technology, and innovation should be incentivised to boost progress towards SDG achievement. Academic reward systems and broader evaluation and impact metrics focused on SDG-relevance and alignment would mobilise transformative SDG action.
