Introduction to the special issue of #socialmedia: the good, the bad, and the ugly "social media is not easily reduced to simplistic framings, but instead enables new connections and collective action, while also risking further fragmentation of our #information environment and greater polarization—while technology companies profit." https://lnkd.in/g7mCHpnY Giulia Conti Mari Maasilta #criticalnewsliteracy #digitalliteracy #informationliteracy

“Without institutions and practices that can establish and preserve the credibility of #information, there is no solid ground for democratic discourse. What we will see instead is an “arms race of ploy and counterploy” in which the whole notion of objectivity is a casualty of the battle of truths… …#democracy requires a common narrative of binding values, ideals and shared convictions. But the informatization of reality leads to its atomization — separated spheres of what is thought to be true. … Bits of information provide neither meaning nor orientation. They do not congeal into a narrative. They are purely additive. From a certain point onward, they no longer inform — they deform. …democracy has given way to “#infocracy” as peer-to-peer connectivity “redirects the flows of #communication. Information is spread without forming a public sphere. It is produced in private spaces and distributed to private spaces. The web does not create a public.” #digitalmedia #infopocalypse #disinformation #digitalsociety https://lnkd.in/dSTMNHsq

🔍 Exploring 7 Key Issues Shaping Disinformation in Today's World 🔍 As the digital landscape evolves, understanding and combating #disinformation has never been more crucial. The World Economic Forum has developed an interesting briefing on this topic in partnership with UCAM Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia. Helping our clients navigate this complex environment is at the heart of our daily work in Kreab Worldwide and this study is a good summary of the challenges converging in the present moment: 1️⃣ Digital Media Literacy: With the expansion of media channels, critical thinking remains paramount. Users need skills not just to access information but to discern its quality and reliability, especially in an era dominated by social news sharing and algorithm-driven content. 2️⃣ Monetizing Disinformation: Massive flows of disinformation have proven highly profitable for some. The engagement-driven economy fueled by disinformation poses challenges as ideological biases drive engagement, eroding trust in truth. 3️⃣ Political Polarization: The participatory nature of the internet accelerates the spread of harmful content like hate speech and disinformation. Structural causes of societal division fuel this polarization. 4️⃣ Social Media: Social media channels provide a public space for free speech, but the open nature of the internet means the actors participating, and their motivations, cannot be easily controlled. These can influence the dissemination of information across various platforms. Social media disrupts traditional media's asymmetry, enabling diverse forms of communication that need to be well understood. 5️⃣ Conspiracy Theories: These theories attempt to explain significant events through secret plots and powerful actors. Emotional involvement and the need to make sense of threatening events drive their proliferation. 6️⃣ Closed Messaging Apps: These apps, while aiding personal communication, also serve as hotbeds for spreading disinformation. They challenge visibility and often circulate false information within closed networks. 7️⃣ Information Disorders: The complexity of the modern media landscape has led to a plethora of false content. Terms like "misinformation" and "disinformation" attempt to capture the varied nature of this challenge. We should avoid the concept of #fakenews. If it is fake, it is NOT news. Understanding these issues is pivotal in navigating the digital era, empowering users to critically assess information and combat the spread of disinformation.
